Woolwich Township
Director of Community Development
Woolwich Township
Matt Blake is in his fifth year serving as Director of Community Development for Woolwich Township in Gloucester County, New Jersey, where he is working to remake the town into regional smart-growth destination. In his position, Matt facilitates both development and preservation as part of his township's commitment to comprehensive planning and sustainable development. His work includes advancing major park expansion and community development projects that are designed to foster economic development and a flourishing tourism industry that enhances local quality of life and aggressive land protective efforts. Matt is also spearheading efforts to help the town implement a complex Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) program, which will harness development pressure and the private market to preserve an additional 3,000 acres of valuable farmland and natural resources, while redirecting up to 3,800 future residential units from the town’s environs into its state-approved, Smart-Growth Center. Before joining Woolwich, Matt served as Program Manager for the American Littoral Society, a dynamic environmental organization, where he spent seven years working with local, state, federal and other partners, protecting and preserving hundreds of acres of land important to the coast within the South Jersey Bayshore Region. He has a BS in Conservation Biology from Prescott College, and an MS in Resource Management & Administration from Antioch University.
